Best Backup Solutions for 2021

With the onslaught of the pandemic, much of our workforce has moved to working from home multiple days per week, so it’s important to ensure that you safeguard your business against data loss. Finding a reliable solution to back up your data needn’t be a daunting task. Put a backup plan in place for all your documents and data, otherwise you risk losing everything.

2021 has us navigating enough uncertainties so ensure you have a rapid recovery approach from threats such as ransomware. Select an easy to use and manage solution that works best for your business and gives you peace of mind.

There are 3 main ways of backing up data and documents, and it is suggested that you look at using more than one of these approaches:

  • Local backups
  • Cloud backups
  • Server backups

Local Backup

A local backup using a local disk still seems to be the most common and quick way to back up your data, documents (or even an entire computer) and have all the backups available for a fast restore. Many companies use these external hard disks or tape drive local backup solutions as they provide fast, cost effective storage and are very easy for even the IT novice to operate.

It is however important to keep in mind that the data, is only as safe as the building it’s in.
What happens in the case of fire, burglary, flooding, storm damage, or even something as simple as a bump on your external drive? All your data backups could be lost in the blink of an eye. Thus, a local backup should only form as one part of your backup strategy and your strategy should be supported by another solution.

Cloud backup

As an emerging industry, cloud backup solutions have really taken off. As our network infrastructure improves in South Africa particularly, so does the possibilities of what we can do with our data. The only catch being that the speed of your internet determines not only the speed of your backup but the speed of your recovery. Your data however is most likely kept safe and secure (depending on the supplier you choose).

Microsoft OneDrive is an example of a cloud backup and sync storage option that is bundled with Microsoft Office 365. With Microsoft OneDrive and SharePoint you can store your companies data in the cloud and sync changes or work with colleagues on the same office documents.

Backup Software

Backup software is used to make an exact copy of data. Additional copies of files and databases are made and may be used at a later stage to restore the original contents in the event of data loss, corruption or infection.

SolarWinds Backup is a prime example of data and server backup software, that can help solve your back up worries! It is designed to choose the data and assets you need to protect, and best of all it can be managed from a single dashboard. The package includes private cloud storage and multiple recovery methods, which keep things uncomplicated and easy to manage.

You can back up and recover

  • Physical and virtual servers
  • Workstations
  • Business documents
  • Microsoft 365 Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint
